Children’s Room Wall Mural: How to Choose by Age Without Getting It Wrong

Children’s room with forest animals wall mural, Scandinavian style

You’ve found THE perfect pattern. You order. The mural arrives, you hang it, and the savannah lion ends up cut in half right at the edge of the wall. The result: a room that looks like a failed attempt rather than the cosy haven you had in mind. This problem is avoidable.

This guide helps you choose a children’s room wall mural that stands the test of time: which theme for which age, which wall to put it on, how to position the pattern at the right height, and how to order to the centimetre so the result looks like the photo.

What age really changes in the choice

Most guides reason by style: jungle for some, unicorns for others, dinosaurs for boys. That is not the right starting point. A child’s age changes three concrete things: the right amount of visual stimulation, how long the theme will last, and whether or not you need to be able to change it easily.

0–2 years: gentle sensory comfort for the baby room

A newborn first distinguishes strong contrasts; fine details and nuances come with the months. A very busy wall does not help a room whose first function remains sleep. That is no reason to make an all-white room. It is a reason to choose light patterns, soft palettes and simple shapes.

For a baby room wall mural, two directions work well:

  • Pastels and simple shapes: the Baby Rainbow design offers rainbows, clouds and stars in pastel tones on light backgrounds, with no complicated scene.
  • Baby animals with low contrast: the Pastel Baby Safari design shows lion cubs and baby cheetahs in watercolour, among soft foliage, easy on the eye without being garish.

What is better avoided at this age: very dark murals, such as night forests or deep starry skies, covering a whole wall. Once the night light is off, the room can feel oppressive.

3–6 years: the age of heroes and story worlds

The child starts to have strong preferences. He wants dinosaurs. She wants unicorns. These wishes are legitimate, with one caveat: a cartoon character that is fashionable today can look dated in two years.

The practical rule: prefer broad themed worlds to TV licences. A naturalistically drawn dinosaur lasts longer than a character from this season’s hit series.

Three designs that hold up well at this age:

  • Kids’ Jungle Tiger & Monkeys: tigers, monkeys, toucans and sloths in a flat-drawn jungle with a green palette. A kids’ jungle wall mural that stays relevant until age 8–9.
  • Dinosaurs for Kids: the dinosaur wall mural, a classic for ages 3–6, here in watercolour or pastel geometric shapes rather than cartoon characters.
  • Forest Animals: deer, fox and a bear family in a watercolour birch forest, Scandinavian spirit. Works for every child and carries through the ages without ageing.

6–12 years: prefer worlds that last

From age 6, the child grows up fast. What they liked at 6 can feel ‘for little kids’ at 9. This is the age to invest in a broader world (maps, science, exploration) that pays off in the long run.

Three directions that hold up well:

  • Kids’ World Map: illustrated and colourful, it stimulates geographical curiosity at 7 and is still decorative at 12.
  • Space and Planets for Kids: starry sky, planets, rockets and astronauts. The cleanest versions last until the early teens.
  • Ocean for Kids: whale, jellyfish, turtle and coral, as in a picture book. The marine world is one of the few children’s themes that ages into something more mature rather than something dated.

The 3 rules that spare you regrets

Rule 1: one wall, not four

Covering all four walls of a child’s room is rarely a good idea. A pattern repeated on four sides quickly becomes overwhelming, especially in a small bedroom of 9 to 12 m².

Go for the feature wall: the one you see first on entering, or the one facing the bed. That is where the wall mural will have the most visual impact. The other three walls stay painted in a neutral colour picked from the pattern, and the room can breathe.

A practical advantage: you reduce the area to order. On a 3 × 2,40 m wall, that comes to 7,2 m². On four walls of a 10 m² room, you easily reach 30 m². The difference is significant, at the same price per m².

Rule 2: position the pattern at the child’s eye level

This is the quietest mistake. You picture the mural from your own height, around 1,60 m. But a 4-year-old’s eyes are 90–100 cm from the floor. Lying in bed, their gaze falls even lower.

A pattern centred 1,60 m from the floor (typical adult eye level) puts the focal point out of the child’s line of sight when they are in bed. In practice, the animal’s head or the central detail of the pattern ends up too high.

How to correct it: when choosing the design, look at the preview cropped to your dimensions to see where the main subject lands. If it ends up too high, choose a design where the animal or the strong detail sits in the middle or the lower part of the image. For a child of 3–6, a focal point between 80 cm and 110 cm from the floor lands where they actually look.

Rule 3: choose a world that will last several years

A wall mural is hung once. You don’t change it every year. Ask yourself: will this theme still work when the child is 4 years older?

Here is a simple guide:

Theme Estimated span of interest Why
Forest / stylised animals 6–10 years Natural, cross-age theme
Ocean / underwater world 6–10 years Matures into something more grown-up
Space / planets 5–10 years Still relevant in the teens
Safari / savannah 5–8 years Very versatile depending on the graphic style
Semi-realistic dinosaurs 4–7 years May feel ‘for little kids’ after 10
TV series characters 1–3 years Tied to a trend or a licence
Highly stylised unicorn 2–5 years Short phase, risk of tiring of it quickly

Made to measure to the centimetre: why the pattern won’t be cut off at random

The problem with standard rolls

A classic wallpaper roll has a fixed width, often 53 cm. The pattern is printed continuously, and the pattern match is calculated so that the strips join up. But no one guarantees that the centre of the pattern will land exactly in the middle of your wall.

A common result: the giraffe loses its head 3 cm from the ceiling. The tree is cut mid-trunk at the end of the wall. The starry sky ends in a triangle in the corner. That is not a hanging problem, it is a product design problem.

How a made-to-measure wall mural works

With a made-to-measure wall mural, the pattern is cropped and printed exactly to the dimensions of your wall. The lion stays whole. The tree grows all the way to the ceiling. The sky falls neatly on each side.

The process in three steps:

  1. You measure your wall: width and height in centimetres, measured at two different points. Older walls are not always perfectly straight: take the largest measurement.
  2. You enter the dimensions in the made-to-measure configurator: the mural is printed to your exact measurements, with a 10 cm trimming allowance added to the width and 10 cm to the height, already included in the price shown. For a 300 × 250 cm wall, you receive a 310 × 260 cm mural. The allowance is there for adjusting and trimming cleanly.
  3. You receive numbered panels, ready to hang in the order shown. Prices start at 29,90 €/m² in smooth non-woven, with free tracked delivery in 7–15 working days.

Test before you order: the 3 € sample

Printed colours may differ slightly from what you see on screen. This is true of any printed medium. Golds, for example, are rendered in matt shades (ochre, copper, golden brown), with no metallic sheen.

Before ordering a large format, order a 30 × 20 cm sample for 3 €. Put it up on the wall at the time of day when the bedroom gets its main light. You check the colour, the texture and the result in the room’s real light. All 3 finishes are available as samples.

Tenant or homeowner: which finish for a child’s room?

Smooth and textured non-woven for homeowners

Two pasted finishes for homeowners:

  • Smooth non-woven at 29,90 €/m²: even matt finish, suited to rooms the child will occupy for several years. Classic pasted hanging, durable over time.
  • Textured non-woven at 34,90 €/m²: a slight relief that gives the pattern extra depth. Particularly beautiful on designs with foliage or organic themes (jungle, forest).

Self-adhesive non-woven: an option for tenants or a room that will evolve

For tenants, or anyone expecting to change the theme within 3–4 years, self-adhesive non-woven at 39,90 €/m² answers the question: can you hang a wall mural in a child’s room without paste? Removal depends on the condition of the wall and the paint already on it.

This finish is hung without paste, on a smooth, clean and dry wall. It can be repositioned during hanging, which leaves time to adjust the placement. It is an option for a wall mural in a rented child’s room, or for a room whose theme you know will change as the child does.

Good to know: ‘repositionable during hanging’ only refers to the moment you apply the mural. Check the condition of your wall before you start. See the hanging guide for the conditions to meet.

3 common mistakes that spoil a good idea

Mistake 1: choosing the favourite pattern without thinking about 3 years from now. A 4-year-old’s room is often redone around age 7–8. A very distinctive theme (TV character, seasonal graphic trend) speeds up that renewal. A theme that evolves (forest, ocean, space) can potentially save you several years without touch-ups.

Mistake 2: not ordering the sample. Colours on screen depend on your monitor, its brightness and its calibration. The printed result is matt. A vivid turquoise blue can look calmer once printed on non-woven in a north-facing room. The 3 € sample is the only way to confirm the real result before committing to a non-returnable order. Reminder: a product made to your dimensions is excluded from the right of withdrawal under Article L221-28 (3) of the French Consumer Code (Code de la consommation); see the Service-Public page on the right of withdrawal.

Mistake 3: measuring only once, at a single point. A wall in an older house can vary by 2 to 5 cm between floor and ceiling, or from one corner to the other. Measure the height in two places (left and right side of the wall) and take the largest value. Do the same for the width. The 10 cm trimming allowance included in your Novomur order (already in the price shown) absorbs these small variations, but only if you measured correctly to begin with.

FAQ: your questions about children’s room wall murals

From what age can you hang a wall mural in a child’s room?

From birth, as long as you choose a suitable pattern. For ages 0–2, favour soft palettes and simple shapes. A wall mural can be hung before the baby even arrives: the delivery time of 7–15 working days is easy to plan for while you prepare the room.

Just one wall or the whole room?

One wall is enough, and it is often the right choice. The feature wall (facing the bed or visible on entering) creates the expected visual impact without overloading the room. The other three walls, painted in a neutral colour taken from the pattern, complete the look coherently.

Which finish should you choose for a child’s room?

Homeowner: smooth non-woven (29,90 €/m²) or textured (34,90 €/m²), hung with paste, durable result. Tenant, or a room whose theme will change: self-adhesive non-woven (39,90 €/m²), paste-free, repositionable during hanging, on a smooth, clean and dry wall.

How do you update the room as the child grows?

Two strategies. First: choose a long-lasting theme from the start (forest, ocean, space, world map). Second: opt for the self-adhesive finish and change the feature wall when the child moves on to a new phase, without heavy work. In both cases, the three walls painted neutral let you update the room with furniture and accessories without touching the wall mural.

How long does it take to receive the wall mural?

Every Novomur wall mural is printed to order, to the exact dimensions of your wall. Delivery takes 7–15 working days across the EU, with free tracked delivery. Allow for this time in your hanging schedule.

Choose your design from the Baby & Children’s Room collection, enter the exact dimensions of your wall in the made-to-measure configurator and see the design on the photo of the room with the ‘On my wall’ tab before you order. To test the result before you start, the 30 × 20 cm sample for 3 € is made for that.
