Bedroom Wall Mural: Which Choices Help You Sleep Better?

Quel papier peint pour une chambre ? Les meilleurs choix pour mieux dormir

The bedroom is not a living room. You sleep there, you recover there, you start every day there. The choice of wall mural has a direct impact on your sleep quality and how you feel when you wake up.

Here is how to choose a wall mural suited to a bedroom, by room, by profile and by the effect you are after. With the designs that really soothe, and those that, without your realising it, wear you down over the weeks.

The basic rule: a bedroom calls for calm

What a bedroom wall mural should do

  • Soothe your eyes when you are in bed
  • Stay pleasant when you see it every day (at bedtime and on waking)
  • Complement your bedding without competing with it

What a bedroom wall mural should not do

  • Stimulate the eye (patterns that are too graphic, garish colours)
  • Overload your field of vision (patterns that are too dense)
  • Reflect the light (a wall mural that is too glossy or metallic)

5 Colours That Suit a Bedroom

It is not only a question of taste. It is also a question of perceived effect: some colours are reputed to be calming, others more stimulating.

1. Deep blue or midnight blue

Blue is a calming colour. According to a Travelodge study of 2 000 sleepers, blue bedrooms are associated with particularly good sleep. Deep midnight blue creates a cocoon atmosphere without making the room feel dark if the lighting is right.

Novomur variations:

  • Plain navy blue (the configurator’s ‘Plain colour or gradient’ option)
  • Midnight blue mineral texture
  • Discreet floral pattern on a midnight blue background

2. Sage green

Sage green has become a very popular bedroom colour in 2026. Neither too neutral nor too colourful, it evokes nature and soothes without sending the eye to sleep.

Variations:

  • Plain sage green
  • Watercolour eucalyptus on a cream background
  • Sage green bamboo on a stone background

3. Beige and earthy tones (taupe, sand, soft terracotta)

Warm, earthy tones create an instant cocoon effect. Particularly suited to bedrooms that lack natural warmth (white paint, cold laminate flooring).

Variations:

  • Ecru linen texture
  • Cream Calacatta marble
  • Plain soft terracotta

4. Off-white and cream

For those who prefer a bright, calm bedroom. Not pure white (too clinical), but a slightly tinted off-white.

Avoid: cold white such as RAL 9010, which recalls a hospital. Prefer a warm white, off-white or ivory.

5. Soft grey

Pearl grey or taupe grey gives a modern, calm atmosphere. Particularly suited to bedrooms with dark or contemporary furniture.

Avoid: a very bluish cold grey, which makes the room austere.

Colours to avoid in a bedroom

Colour Why to avoid it
Bright red Stimulating, raises the heart rate
Saturated orange Energising, bad for falling asleep
Garish yellow Anxiety-inducing over a large area
Total black on every wall Creates a feeling of being shut in
Garish multicolour The eye never rests

Note: these colours can work as accents (cushion, curtain, accessory), but not over a whole wall in a bedroom.

The 4 designs that really work in a bedroom

1. Soft watercolour floral

Florals in a soft watercolour composition (pink cherry blossom, white flowers on cream, eucalyptus) bring poetry without overloading the room.

Who it suits:

  • Couples who like a romantic mood
  • Light bedrooms with plain bedding
  • Decor mixing linen, light wood and ceramic

Avoid: very saturated florals (black background, neon flowers), too energising for a bedroom.

2. Calming mineral texture

Softly veined Calacatta marble, worked plaster, textured linen: these materials give an understated luxury effect that suits a bedroom.

Who it suits:

  • Modern or contemporary bedrooms
  • Restrained decor with clean-lined furniture
  • People who prefer a ‘smart hotel’ atmosphere to florals

3. Immersive landscape

A soft landscape (misty mountains, forest at dawn, mineral dunes) on the bedhead wall gives a real sense of escape.

Who it suits:

  • People who love to travel
  • Bedrooms of at least 13 m²
  • Clean-lined decor (the pattern does all the visual work)

Avoid: very high-contrast or very colourful landscapes, which can wake the eye up instead of soothing it.

4. Understated geometric pattern

Soft lines, stylised arches, discreet Scandinavian motifs: for those who want a graphic touch without falling into a busy pattern.

Who it suits:

  • Modern Japandi or Scandinavian decor
  • People who do not like florals
  • Bedrooms with light wood furniture

Patterns to avoid in a bedroom

  • Highly saturated patterns (bright colours, strong contrasts)
  • Colourful exotic animals (toucans, parrots: too energising)
  • Highly detailed photographic designs: the eye hunts for detail and tires
  • Gold damask on saturated black: a boudoir effect that can be oppressive over a large area
  • ‘3D trompe-l’œil’ effect that creates tiring illusions of depth

Which bedroom wall should you treat?

Recommended wall: behind the bed

It is the wall you see as you walk into the room, and the bed frames it naturally. It is also the one your gaze leaves at bedtime (you have your back to it) and finds again on waking.

Alternative: the wall opposite the bed

If your bed is against a window or a wall that cannot be treated, the wall opposite the bed becomes the right choice. You see it on waking and before going to sleep.

Avoid

  • Wardrobe or dressing room wall: hidden by furniture
  • Door wall: no distance to enjoy the pattern from
  • Wall with a large window: the pattern gets cut up

What pattern size should you plan for?

For a bedhead wall, here are the standard dimensions:

Bed Recommended pattern width Recommended height
Single bed (90 cm) 150 to 170 cm At least 240 cm
Double bed (140 cm) 200 to 220 cm At least 240 cm
Queen-size bed (160 cm) 220 to 240 cm At least 240 cm
King-size bed (180 cm) 240 to 260 cm At least 240 cm

Golden rule: the pattern should extend 30 to 40 cm beyond each side of the bed to give a ‘natural frame’ effect.

Trimming allowance: enter the exact dimensions of your wall; the 10 cm trimming allowance in width and height is already included in the price shown.

Which material should you choose for a bedroom?

Three finishes are available in the Novomur configurator:

  • Smooth non-woven: matt finish, the recommended standard for the bedroom
  • Textured non-woven: visible grain, gives a more refined look
  • Self-adhesive: paste-free hanging, repositionable while you hang it. An option for tenants: removal depends on the condition of the wall.

The right default choice

Smooth non-woven suits most bedrooms. Barring special cases (rented home, damp), it is the standard material.

Important: a made-to-measure wall mural cannot be returned or exchanged because you have changed your mind or made an error in the measurements. That is precisely why you choose the crop yourself on the product page and check your dimensions before ordering. The AI visualisation and the 3 € sample are your two safety nets before you order.

How much does a Novomur bedroom wall mural cost?

The price is calculated per m², based on the exact dimensions you enter in the configurator: 29,90 €/m² for smooth non-woven, 34,90 €/m² for textured non-woven, 39,90 €/m² for self-adhesive non-woven. The total amount is shown in the summary, before payment. Tracked delivery, free across the EU, within 7–15 working days.

The three finishes (all printed on matt non-woven):

  • Smooth non-woven (29,90 €/m²): a faithful rendering of the artwork, pasted hanging. The standard option.
  • Textured non-woven (34,90 €/m²): a slight relief that gives the pattern some texture.
  • Self-adhesive non-woven (39,90 €/m²): paste-free hanging, repositionable while you hang it, on a smooth, clean, dry wall. An option for tenants: removal depends on the condition of the wall.

Before ordering, the 30 × 20 cm sample for 3 € is available in all three finishes: a made-to-measure wall mural cannot be returned or exchanged because you have changed your mind or made an error in the measurements, in line with Article L221-28 (3) of the French Consumer Code (Code de la consommation); the statutory guarantee of conformity still applies.

Renting? Self-adhesive changes everything

If you rent, Novomur’s self-adhesive material is the suitable option for a bedroom. Paste-free hanging; removal depends on the condition of the wall and the paint underneath.

Before hanging, test a 10 cm × 10 cm patch behind a piece of furniture. If the wall paint copes with being peeled off, that is a good sign.
